István Bajkai was born on 17 January 1964 in Budapest. After graduation from secondary school, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). From 1985 to 1988 he was a demonstrator at the Department of International Law at ELTE. During his university years he became a member of the Bibó István College and in 1988 he became one of the thirty-seven founding members of Fidesz party.
In 1991, he attended the “Academy of American and International Law” training at Texas State University, organized by the Southwestern Legal Foundation. In 1996, he studied English law at Oxford. Between 1995 and 1997, he studied international commercial law at the Institute of Legal Training of Eötvös Loránd University.
Between 1989 and 1992, he was a candidate for lawyer at the No. 1 Legal Counsel Working Community and Patent Office (later Zsolnay, Kamarás and Partners Law Firm). From 1992, he was a member of the Zsolnay, Kamarás and Partners Law Firm. In 1994, he practiced law in Cologne at the Cornelius, Haesemann, Bartenbach & Partners Law Firm. He joined the SBGK Law Firm in 1995, has been a partner since 2000 and member of the board from 2012 to 2018.
He specializes in international law, data protection law, copyright law, civil law and investment law. He has given regular lectures on international investment, contract law, copyright, digital law and data protection, databases, and software law.
From 2014 to 2018 Budapest, he was the Deputy Mayor of Erzsébetváros, the 7th District of Budapest. He is currently on hold for almost thirty years as a lawyer since he was elected a Member of Parliament in 2018. He is currently the Vice President of the Legislative Committee and a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Parliament of Hungary.
In 2015, he received an Award for Outstanding Lawyer Work in recognition of his work as a lawyer. In 2017, he received the Laurus Award from the Lámpás ’92 Foundation. In 2018, he was awarded an honorary székely (sekler) title in Oklánd for his legal assistance to young Erdélyian (Transylvanian) people István Beke and Zoltán Szőcs imprisoned. In 2019, he received the Széchenyi Gold Medal from the Széchenyi Scientific Society in recognition of its professional work. In 2019, he was awarded the Silver Grade Knight’s Cross Award of ’56 Loyalty to the Homeland.

of the board of trustees of the Munkácsy Foundation, president of the board of trustees
of the Budapest Philharmonic Concert Friends, member of the moard of trustees
of the Central European Press and Media Foundation, vice-chairman of the Aranycsapat
Testület (Golden Team Body), member of the Human Dignity Council.
